4 Common Mistakes Employees Make When Filing Injury Claims

Obviously, filing an injury claim is very important. If you have been hurt on the job, you need to be sure you are rightfully compensated and taken care of.

However, that is often easier said than done. Filing this sort of claim can be overwhelming and very confusing, which means you should always seek help when you have to do it. There are just so many common mistakes that people make, especially when they are attempting to do this on their own.

Here are just a few things you should be aware of when you are filing your injury claims.

Delaying

Perhaps the biggest and most consequential mistake you can make when you are filing an injury claim is putting it off and delaying it until later down the road.

For many employers, workplace injury claims need to be done quickly, sometimes even without 24 to 48 hours. However, there is often so much going on after an injury and it’s easy to forget about the order of things and what needs to be finished and when.

But the longer you wait, the easier it’ll be for your employer or an insurance company to say that your injury wasn’t related to your job and you shouldn’t be compensated.

That means that you need to ensure the ball gets rolling right away, even hours after you have been hurt.

Not Getting Medical Attention

If you are injured, you need to be seen by a medical professional as soon as possible. It doesn’t matter how minor you believe the injury is, get it checked out by an expert who can tell you what’s going on.

Some injuries don’t show their most severe symptoms right away. It may take hours, days, or even months before you know the damage that has been inflicted on you. A doctor will be able to take a look at you and can see problems that you may not feel yet, which will prevent it from escalating but also confirm to you and your employer that you have been hurt.

Inaccurate Paperwork

Filing an injury claim requires a lot of work. There is much to do and strict timelines and deadlines about when you need to do them. And a major mistake you can make is to do the paperwork incorrectly. Even just a small little problem can complicate your claim and throw the entire process off course.

Incomplete forms, inaccurate details about your injury, and missing paperwork are all common problems that people make when they are filling out their forms. You need to keep these in mind. You cannot be too accurate. You want to make sure that you get every single part of your paperwork completed on time and accurately, or else you will put yourself and your claim in a very bad position.

Not Documenting Everything

No detail should be left out when you are filing your injury claim. The key to success in these situations is being as accurate and detailed as possible.

This means that you need to document absolutely everything you can when it comes to your personal injury. From receipts for some treatment you received, information given to you by your employer or doctor, medical reports, and notes about your daily life, you need to be sure that any bit of information is kept with you as you are filing your claim.

Each of these things will help paint the picture of your incident and injury and will prove that you were indeed hurt and need to be taken care of properly. If you are hoping to substantiate your claim, you should work hard to be sure that you have as many accurate documents as possible.

Conclusion

No one ever wants to get hurt at work and we know the concept of filing an injury claim takes a lot of work. In fact, you may feel overwhelmed and nervous about what to do and when to do it. But you just need to put your trust in someone who knows how to handle this situation, what steps to take, and how the entire process will look.

Filing an injury claim shouldn’t be something that frightens you, you just need to be sure you are doing everything correctly and following every step carefully.
