Knowing how to respond if you are ever involved in a car accident is essential, your instincts after an accident may be to leave the scene or call your insurance right away. But some actions can actually hurt your car accident claim down the line. Here are 7 things you should never do after a car accident:

Leave the Car Accident Scene

With hit-and-run crashes occurring every 43 seconds in the U.S., the temptation to drive away may be strong. But leaving the scene will likely lead to criminal charges, fines, license suspension, and problems with your insurance claim. Always remain at the scene, even if the accident seems minor. Exchange information with the other driver and notify the police.

Neglect to Call the Police

You should always call the police after an accident, even for minor collisions. An officer will prepare an official report to document what happened. This report will be critical for insurance and legal claims later. Even if the other driver says not to call, you should report the accident anyway.

Admit Fault or Apologize For the Crash

Be careful what you say after an accident, as it can be used against you later. Even if you think you caused the crash, do not admit fault or apologize. Let the insurance companies determine who is at fault later. Just stick to the facts about what happened. Anything you say in the way of apologizing or accepting blame can hurt your case.

Forget to Gather The Other Driver’s Information

Before leaving the scene, be sure to collect key information. Get the other driver’s name, contact details, insurance, license plate, and driver’s license number. Also, take photos of the accident scene, damage to both vehicles, and injuries. If there are witnesses, get their contact information too. These details will help protect you later.

Delay Medical Treatment After Your Accident

Some injuries from car accidents, like whiplash or back pain, may not be obvious right away. Don’t refuse medical treatment at the scene just because you feel fine. Even if you don’t go in an ambulance, see a doctor as soon as possible after the accident. Prompt evaluation and treatment will benefit your health and potential injury claim.

Discuss the Accident on Social Media

It’s natural to want to vent or describe a traumatic event online. But resist the urge to post about the accident on social media. Insurers and lawyers can use your posts as evidence. Stick to the facts on paper and avoid admitting guilt or providing opinions while the case is open.

Speak to Insurers Before a Car Accident Attorney

Talking to insurance companies can be tricky after being. They may try to record you admitting fault or make lowball offers. Have an experienced car accident attorney help handle conversations with insurers on your behalf. An attorney knows how to build the strongest case for full compensation.

Keeping these guidelines in mind will help protect your rights and best interests after a collision. Focus on getting medical care, collecting information, and contacting an attorney for advice moving forward. Avoid self-incrimination or accepting an unfair settlement. With smart actions after an accident, you can emerge safer and more secure.
