AJS Commission on Forensic Science and Public Policy

Summary

In conjunction with the Institute of Forensic Science and Public Policy, AJS created a national bipartisan commission to help the Institute set its research agenda and adopt national forensic science standards for use by law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, practicing attorneys and courts. These standards will also be used to inform legislative and other public policy decisions.

The Commission consists of 38 members that represent a diverse set of disciplines, including scientists, law and criminal justice professors, law enforcement officials, judges, prosecutors, practicing attorneys and victim rights advocates.

The Commission is co-chaired by former Attorney General Janet Reno, former FBI Director William Webster, and renowned statistician Dr. Stephen Feinberg. Dr. Donald Kennedy, president emeritus of Stanford University, and editor-in-chief to Science Magazine, will serve as Honorary Chair. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has appointed Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Richard Hertling to serve as U.S. Justice Department liaison.

Mission

The American Judicature Society Commission on Forensic Science and Public Policy is composed of distinguished scientists, nationally respected law enforcement officials, prominent attorneys and judges, and other citizens devoted to improving the administration of justice through the application of cross-disciplinary research and education. The commission has two primary purposes: To assist the American Judicature Society Institute of Forensic Science and Public Policy frame the Institute’s research agenda and, most importantly, independently consider and adopt forensic science standards, guidelines and best practices when appropriate.
