Judicial Nominating Commission Network

For nearly a century, The American Judicature Society has worked to promote and maintain merit selection of judges.  The cornerstone of a strong merit selection process is the nominating commission, those individuals charged with evaluating applicants to find the very best people to sit on the bench.  Judicial nominating commissions vary greatly, and AJS continues to advocate for strong, independent commissions that will ensure fair and impartial courts for all Americans.

Consistent with the AJS mission of developing the most effective merit selection processes possible, the JNC Network is a new organization that will be a clearinghouse for information and allow commissioners to communicate with each other about their experiences.  AJS staff members look forward to answering questions and facilitating communication among nominating commissioners, administrative staff who work with nominating commissions, scholars, media outlets, judicial reform organizations, the legal community, and interested citizens.

AJS Files Amicus Brief in Support of Alaska Merit Selection
With assistance from pro bono counsel O’Melveney & Myers LLP in Los Angeles, CA, AJS has filed an amicus curiae brief in Kirk v. Carpeneti, a case involving the Alaska Judicial Council (AJC) that is currently before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. A U.S. District Court judge ruled in September 2009 that the role of lawyer members of the AJC, who are appointed by the Board of Governors of the Alaska Bar Association, in nominating judicial candidates for appointment by the governor does not violate the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution.
