Juries In-depth
Summary
The American jury system
is a huge and complex topic. This Web site provides information
regarding many key jury topics. The Juries In-depth portal
contains the following six sections.
|
Choosing Who Serves
To understand how a person ends
up serving as a juror, one must realize that a complex, multi-stage process is
involved. This section describes eligibility and requirements to serve, legal
rules for summoning, and potential juror dismissals.
Jury Improvement Efforts
Over the last 30 years, numerous jury system improvements have been suggested,
and many have been implemented. This section describes those efforts.
Right to a Jury Trial
This section examines the scope of the right to a jury trial in civil and
criminal cases in both federal and state courts, including Supreme Court cases
on the right to a jury determination on sentence enhancements.
Jury Powers
Here we examine jury powers to determine facts and to apply law, as well
as the debate about jury power to interpret or even nullify law.
Jury Decision Making
This section explores some aspects of social science research on jury
decision making; examines the topic of deadlocked juries; and canvasses
juror misconduct and possible remedies for it.
Privacy, Protection and Publicity
The final section focuses on several topics of great practical concern
to both jurors and the legal system: sequestration, juror privacy,
change of venue, "media circus" trials, and how the system treats jurors
after their service, including systemic responses to juror stress.
