About Hawai'i State Chapter
 

Summary

Established in 1998, the Hawai`i State Chapter of the American Judicature Society has over a hundred members comprised of judges, lawyers and other citizens of the State of Hawai`i.  The Chapter was formed to strengthen support of the objectives and ideals of  AJS National, which is an independent organization.  The Chapter’s activities are geared to improving Hawai'i justice system through (a) focusing on merit selection, (b) judicial ethics and accountability, and (c) education.  

Members can serve on committees, attend Sidebar, awards, educational and other annual programs.  Membership offers opportunities to share ideas and recommendations with and to meet other community, judicial and bar leaders and members interested in judicial administration and reform.

Purpose

The purpose of the Hawai`i State Chapter (HSC) shall be to support the American Judicature Society (AJS) and to promote the effective administration of justice on the national and local levels.

Membership

You can become a member of the AJS Hawaii State Chapter by:

a.     Becoming a member of AJS, our national organization.   For instructions on how to join, click here.

b.     And, contacting an HSC officer.

A bi-monthly publication, Judicature, is mailed to AJS members as part of being a member.

Board of Directors, Officers and Committees
HSC is the local chapter of AJS, which is a 501 c 3 nonprofit organization.  It is comprised of a board of directors and standing and ad hoc committees.  Active participation by members provides opportunities to interact with judges, lawyers and business and community representatives on various matters related to the administration of justice.  Membership participation is highly encouraged.

Meetings

Meetings of the HSC board of directors are held on the 3rd Thursday of March, June and September in the Carlsmith Ball Conference Room, 22nd Fl, ASB Tower at 1001 Bishop Street in Honolulu, HI.  The December meeting is held on the 1st Thursday in conjunction with the HSC’s annual membership meeting.  Location would be announced in advance of that meeting.  To view the minutes of past meetings, click here.

Awards

AJS Herbert Harley Award
The HSC’s board of directors and members honored retired Hawai`i State Chief Justice William S. Richardson as their 2007 recipient of the AJS Herbert Harley Award.   The Herbert Harley Award is AJS's premier state award and is reserved for individuals to make outstanding contributions that substantially improve the administration of justice in their state. 

Other members of the HSC who have received an award include: former Chief Justice Herman Lum, Honolulu Advertiser, Editor-in-chief George Chaplin and business, community and judiciary leader Herbert Cornuelle.

AJS Justice Award
The American Judicature Society honored lawyer Lawrence S. Okinaga with the 2003 Justice Award at a dinner event on November 10, 2003.   The award recognized Mr. Okinaga’s work on improving the justice system.  He is a past national president of AJS, served on numerous related organizations and has been the driving force behind the establishment and ongoing contributions of the Hawaii`i State Chapter.

ABA Burham "Hod" Greeley Award

The Burnham “Hod” Greeley Award was established by the American Bar Association’s Coalition for Justice to recognize individuals and organizations dedicated to promoting increased public awareness of the need for a fair and impartial judiciary.

This Award is named in honor of the late Hawaiian attorney Burnham “Hod” Greeley.  He was a dedicated leader within the American Bar Association and was committed to promoting public trust and confidence in our justice system.


The 2010 recipient is Lawrence Okinaga from the Carlsmith Ball firm in Honolulu.
