  Cindy Gray-20 years at AJS

October-November 2010

Your location: AJS Main Site :: Cindy Gray

Staff Member Spotlight: Cynthia Gray

Summary

In October Cindy Gray marked 20 years of service to the American Judicature Society.

Since 1990, Cindy Gray has served as director of the Center for Judicial Ethics at AJS, a national clearinghouse for information about judicial ethics and discipline.  Of her many responsibilities, her favorite is writing and editing the quarterly Judicial Conduct Reporter.  She also provides weekly up-dates to the judicial conduct commissions and other organizations that are members of the Center.  In addition to providing research support for the commissions, she travels frequently to speak at judicial conferences and similar meetings.  Although the travel is stressful, she learns at least as much as she teaches during those trips.

“Cindy is one of our nation’s leading experts on judicial conduct and ethics,” remarked AJS Executive Director Seth Andersen.  “Over the past twenty years, she has authored hundreds of indispensible articles on judicial ethics, provided information and advice to state judicial disciplinary entities, and trained thousands of judges, attorneys and judicial conduct commissioners through the biennial AJS National College on Judicial Ethics.  This year, she has innovated a new series of online CLE programs on judicial ethics topics in partnership with West LegalEdcenter.  On top of all that, she is a wonderful and supportive colleague and a committed volunteer for animal welfare agencies in Chicago.”

Recently she also has embraced the challenge of putting judicial ethics stories in nutshells that are close to but do not go over the 140-character limit of Twitter.  Follow the posts at ajs_org

A 1980 graduate of Northwestern University School of Law, Cindy clerked for Judge Hubert L. Will of the United States District Court of the Northern District of Illinois for two years and was a litigation attorney in two private law firms for eight years.

If you have had a question about judicial ethics or discipline, chances are you've “met” Cindy at least electronically.  To send her a note of congratulations on her 20th anniversary with AJS (staff already said thank you with a basket of cookies), you can reach her at cgray@ajs.org.
