Judicature Manuscript Submission Information

Summary

This page summarizes Judicature's requirements for submitted manuscripts.

Judicature manuscripts

Manuscripts should be submitted to David Richert, Editor, at drichert@ajs.org.    They should range in length from approximately 15-25 double-spaced pages, not including footnotes.   To facilitate anonymous reviewing, please submit two copies, one with all identifying information removed.  Hard copies are not required.

Authors are notified of publication decisions in about 45 days. Simultaneous submissions are not permitted.

Footnotes

Footnotes should be in legal citation style (numbers only in text) and should be used in moderation. They should consist primarily of citations, not additional discussion. All footnotes should appear numbered at the end of the text and not at the bottom of each page. The author's biographical note and acknowledgements should not be footnoted, nor should the note regarding the source or explanation of grant/funding. These notes, if applicable, may be included but not numbered before the first footnote. Generally, Judicature uses A Uniform System of Citation, commonly known as the "blue book,'' however, there are some variations. Below are some examples of different footnote citations.

Law or Social Science Journal:
Lurton, A Government of Law or a Government of Men?, 193 N. AM. L. REV. 9-25 (1911).

Beard, The Supreme Court--Usurper or Grantee?, 27 POL. SCI. Q. 1 (1912).

Book:
Horwitz, THE COURTS AND SOCIAL POLICY (Washington, D.C.: Brookings Institution, 1977).

The Federalist Society, THE GREAT DEBATE; INTERPRETING OUR WRITTEN CONSTITUTION (Washington, D.C.: The Federalist Society, 1986).

If there is a specific page reference, it should appear immediately after the title, e.g., SOCIAL POLICY 12

Article in Book:
Havard, From Past to Future, in Jones, ed., THE CHANGING POLITICS OF THE SOUTH 225-235 (New York: W.W. Norton, 1972).

Newspaper Article:
Castillo, Women Ask Rise in Status as Lawyers, N.Y. Times, February 10, 1981, at A-8.

Mann, New Politics Helps Pick Judges, L.A. Times, February 20, 1979, at 5.

Judicature Citation:
Randall, The success of affirmative action in the Sixth Circuit, 62 JUDICATURE 486 (1979).
