22nd National College on Judicial Conduct and Ethics

Summary

After a three-year hiatus, the National College on Judicial Conduct and Ethics returns in October, 2011 to downtown Chicago.

The College, sponsored by the American Judicature Society’s Center for Judicial Ethics, will be held Wednesday October 26 through Friday October 28, 2011, at the Wyndham Chicago.  Over 175 people attended the 2008 College, which provides a forum for judicial conduct commission members and staff, judges, and judicial educators to discuss recent developments in judicial ethics and discipline.

National College registration materials will be available in June.  This year there is a discount for early registration.  If a registration is received and paid prior to August 26 the cost will be $325.  After August 26, the registration fee increases to $350.

The room rate AJS secured at the Wyndham allows attendees to choose a room rate depending on whether they want breakfast at the hotel to be included.  A single occupancy room, will be $209 without breakfast or $219 with breakfast, plus tax.

Check-in for the College and a reception will be on Wednesday, October 26.  There will be a plenary session on Thursday at 8:30 a.m., followed by three break-out sessions with concurrent programs, and two break-out sessions with concurrent programs on Friday, ending at noon.  The Center will apply for certification for continuing legal education credit for the College.  The 21st National College was accredited for 9 general MCLE hours and 9 professionalism hours by the Illinois Minimum Continuing Legal Education Board.

As it has in the past, the College will include sessions on determining the appropriate sanction, introduction to the canons for new members of judicial conduct commissions, and the role of public members.  Planning has begun on the other current judicial ethics issues to be covered at the College.  If you have suggestions, comments, or questions, please contact Cindy Gray at cgray@ajs.org.

Watch the AJS website at www.ajs.org/ethics/college.asp for additional details as they become available.  If you would like to be on an e-mail list for additional announcements about the National College, please send a message letting Krista Maeder know.
