On June 1, 2003, American Judicature Society moved its headquarters to Des Moines, Iowa to establish an affiliation with Drake University. With the assistance of Dwight D. Opperman, AJS moved from Chicago and took up residence in the former Drake presidential home which is now called The Opperman Center at Drake University. The move aligns two independent research organizations together for their mutual benefit.

Drake University was founded in 1881 when the leaders of the first Christian college in Iowa, Oskaloosa College, moved to Des Moines. The institution was renamed Drake University after its financial benefactor, General Francis Marion Drake. Its broad scholastic range includes arts and sciences, business and public administration, education, journalism, a pharmacy college, and one of the oldest law schools in the country. The Drake Law School has the distinction of holding the Opperman Lecture on Constitutional Law which has had eight current or former Supreme Court justices as lecturers. And, since 1910, Drake has been the home for the world renowned Drake Relays.
