Special Merit Citation

Summary

A Special Merit Citation is intended to allow recognition of projects and efforts that benefit some aspect of the judicial system including those that are narrowly focused or time specific.  This award recognizes individuals, publications, state or local courts, organizations and educational institutions that make significant contributions toward improving the justice system.

Procedure

  1. A nomination may only be made by any AJS member.

  2. A completed nomination form must be filled out and received by staff AJS no less than 90 days before the nominator wishes to have the award presented to the recipient.

  3. Nominators should demonstrate to the AJS Awards Committee that this candidate, court, publication or institution is truly deserving of the Special Merit Citation.

  4. After the nomination, and any supporting materials are received, the nomination is submitted to the AJS Awards Committee.

  5. Since approval is not assured, it is preferable that nominees not be contacted prior to a favorable decision.  In the event the nomination is approved, the nominator is contacted to facilitate the planning of the presentation.

  6. An award citation is prepared and a press release is sent to appropriate individuals and organizations prior to the award presentation.

Guidelines

  • Qualifications for the Special Merit Citation may include: increasing public education about the administration of justice; making advances in court management; fostering the interest and understanding of the role of the judicial branch of government; and/or representing the ideal of interested lay citizen participation in strengthening the ties between the justice system and the public.

  • There is no limit on the number of Special Merit Citations that may be given.

  • Current directors will not be considered for an award during their term of service or for one year thereafter.

  • The nominee’s efforts must in some reasonable and identifiable way have furthered the goals of AJS.  Documentation of this should be provided by the person making the nomination.

  • Award nominees should be recognized for accomplishments that have gone above and beyond normal or required duties and responsibilities.
