AJS Committees

Name of Committee Chair Purpose
Amicus Committee Alexander Reinert Prepares and reviews an amicus brief when the Society has an interest in presenting arguments or a position to a court.
     
Audit Committee Carole Wagner Vallianos Responsible for overseeing the annual audit of organizational finances and selection and retention of independent auditor. 
     
Awards Committee Judith Chirlin Responsible for reviewing and approving award nominations and making recommendations to the Board in areas relating to the overall awards program carried out by the Society. 
     
Carpenter National Jury Center Advisory Committee   Helps shape AJS policy and programs on the jury and jury service. Also develops programs for AJS members at annual meetings and for civic and community organizations.
     
Center for Forensic Science and Public Policy   Assists in providing a framework for policy on criminal justice system reforms. Provides guidance on substantive work to the AJS Center for Forensic Science and Public Policy.
     
Center for Judicial Ethics Advisory Committee Dana Fabe Advises the Center for Judicial Ethics on issues relating to judicial conduct and helps plan the National College on Judicial Conduct and Ethics
     
Corporate & Law Firm Benefactor Development Ivan Lui-Kwan and
Thomas Leighton
Provides board leadership to cultivate, secure and maintain financial support from corporations and law firms in furtherance of the work of the Society
     
Editorial Committee Cathy Silak Regularly seeks out sources and generates ideas for editorials, evaluates proposed editorial topics, and prepares the actual written work for Judicature editorials. 
     
Executive Committee Peter D. Webster The officers of AJS comprise the Executive Committee, which is empowered to take action between Board of Directors meetings on urgent matters affecting the Society.
     
Finance Committee Thomas Leighton Reviews the dues structure, financial reporting and accounting procedures of the organization
     
Governance Committee Peter D. Webster Reviews and makes recommendations to the full Board concerning the structure and operations of the Board and its committees
     
Hunter Center for Judicial Selection Advisory Committee Thomas Phillips
Roger Hartley
Advises the Center on issues relating to judicial selection and helps to develop projects to increase the Center’s resources to enhance its programming
     
Membership Committee Ruth McIntyre Provides board leadership to cultivate, retain and promote a strong, diverse, active and expanding membership constituency in support of the work of the Society
     
Nominating Committee William D. Johnston The By-Laws calls for creation of a Nominating Committee that shall nominate and submit to the members and to the Directors the names of persons to be considered for election as Directors and Officers (other than the President). 
     
Program Committee Martha Jamison
Delissa Ridgway
Focuses on developing and implementing research, publications and substantive programs such as educational activities for the organization, panel discussions on a range of issues at AJS meetings, and helps define substantive areas of activity for the Society
     
Strategic Planning Implementation Committee Gordon Doerfer Provides board leadership in implementing the AJS Strategic Plan
