The American Judicature Society officially has a new home. The Opperman
Center at Drake University was dedicated on Saturday, October 25, 2003. Given special
tribute was Dwight D. Opperman whose support of AJS and Drake University is
unsurpassed.
AJS hosted many events to celebrate the occasion. On Saturday morning, a program
was held on AJS and its past and present role in improving the administration of
justice nationally. AJS members and staff conducted presentations from judicial
selection to criminal justice. A forum was also held that morning on the role of
the legislative and executive branches in federal judicial selection.
At noon, a private ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at The Opperman Center with
Mr. Opperman. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy was on hand for this
intimate gathering. Afterward, an open house was held for the public to get a
firsthand glimpse of the turn-of-the-century home.
The official dedication ceremony was held at the new Iowa Judicial Building that
afternoon. Many distinguished individuals spoke at the ceremony including
Justice Kennedy who referred to AJS as the “best of allies,” and David Walker,
Dean of Drake Law School, with touching words of appreciation for Mr. Opperman.
Mr. Opperman was modest in his speech stating that he didn’t realize he had so
many good friends. Mr. Opperman was presented with a gold key as a symbol that
he is always welcome at The Opperman Center at Drake University.
